June Color of the Month

Image
I hope you're sitting down? I'm so excited to announce that I will be starting to reference to a "Color of the Month" each 15th day. So come back to Sterling Carpet One's facebook page and see what color is next!! For my first choice I am using a color from our newer line C2. The Color is named NIGHTSPOT #743 and as I've personally used this color in my own home and seen it's beauty, I love how it can be paired with a modern look, compliment a traditional fabric or enhance the soft feel of a contemporary vision. This almost black BLUE has on intense vibrancy that can also be considered a neutral. Stop in and see all it's beauty for yourself at Sterling Carpet One, Grand Forks ND. My 1/2 bath at home

How to choose the right color

Image
Believe it or not, there are actually a few things to consider when trying to choose a paint color, for any room! 1. To each their own : choose a color because you like it  not because it's on trend or because I told you it's the right one.  You have to live there not me! Trends aren't always right  either, for example GRAY.  Grays have been trending for many years now but in the  perfect scenario they are paired with white trim and often  have a cooler feel to them.  Remember, look at the color choice in your lighting before painting. 2. Find Inspiration : It could be in the form of fabric, tile, flowers, pillows, anything! Explore websites like pinterest  and houzz for ideas. Ask yourself what type of "feel" you are after  for this room? Dramatic, bold, cozy, neutral, calm, quiet, etc. 3. Create a flow : consider threading one color throughout your main living spaces. With a popularity in crea...

Painting Cabinets

Image
I usually get asked daily about 2 things- 1. Grays 2. Painting Cabinets Grays I've touched on in a past post but if you're thinking of painting your cabinets, have a seat, we have a lot to go over. It's a process that requires a lot of work but if you do it right, you should only have to do it once. In a lot of scenarios people are dealing with well built oak cabinets that are in great shape but the finish has gotten orange or yellow over the years due to the aging top coat. New kitchen cabinets can cost you thousands of dollars but painting them and maybe changing the hardware to update them, may only cost you a couple hundred. First I suggest "scuff sanding" the doors. Not to remove the finish but to open up the pores of the existing top coat in order to take something new, your primer! But before we go on to adding the primer I recommend giving them a good cleaning. I would use TSP which is an inexpensive powder cleaner you add to water or simple ...

Master Bedroom

wall mounted lights accent pillow Silhoutte by Hunter Douglas       I distinctly remember years and years ago I watched an Oprah episode where she mentioned that the one room often left for last in a remodel is one of the most important, your master bedroom. Through all the years this piece of advice has stuck with me. In my current home I have recently recovered the headboard and my husband has stabilized the bed. Meaning we vetoed the bed frame and screwed the headboard to the wall. We've had the room painted the same greige for years and I still love it so no change there. My husband has also added faux beams to the room which helps tie the rest of the home in and add some warmth to the space. The window treatments were an investment almost right away when we bought the house because we replaced all the windows and we were able to take two windows and replace them with one large window instead. The window treatments are from Hunter Douglas and are definit...

To swag or not to swag?

Image
About 4 years ago we dove head first into a kitchen remodel and it was the best decision we ever made! The problem is that I work at a design center, meaning that the wheels are always turning. My most recent idea is to change the lighting in my dining room. When we did the remodel it made a more open concept as we took down the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. The easy answer and most cost effective at the time was to replace the lighting with 2 matching flush mount fixtures.  Now I'm thinking of adding a chandelier above my dining room table. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. It was on clearance from Pier1, rustic wood beads and I'm not even sure it's big enough but it would be a change! I'll have to swag  the chain in order to center it above the table and might need to add a medallion to the original hole in the ceiling but those are just thoughts...here is the before- I also think the light I have mounted in the corner would be too mu...

Board-N-Batten

Image
The trend of board and batten walls seems to be an update to traditional wainscoting and I'm loving the look of it! It is fairly common to either go shoulder height with it on a wall or fill the entire wall. After seeing some pictures, I like both! I think it is a great way to add some interest to a space.  I think a full wall is easier to incorporate with wood trim because you can paint the full wall any color and part wall installation seems to look best white. I also like the idea of using it as a broken down catch all for coats in an entry way if you don't have room for the full locker system that is wildly popular in newer homes right now. VS .   I think I have the perfect spot in my house for this! (Josh Cichy HINT HINT) It would replace a storage bench we currently have but it's full of shoes (and sand) the kids never wear! I would love to maybe just use a basket for shoes and hooks for coats/backpacks/snow pants galore!  I'll keep you updated on ho...

Gallery Walls

Image
It seems as though gallery walls are here to stay.  Whether they are to bring in some color and texture to a space or highlight photos you love, mine actually does both. In my master bedroom I have added a panel to mimic a brick wall and created a space for my photos. It just happens to be pictures from my husband and I's journey together from the start. There is a picture from our first international trip together, a picture from our honeymoon and even a picture from when we were on the plane headed to Vegas for his 40th.  The map at the top is from etsy and is of Fort Collins, CO where we met and fell in love. I love that this wall is the last thing I see when going to bed and the first thing I see when waking up. It's amazing to me that a gallery wall can be as organized or chaotic as you like. Meaning it can be a very structured rectangle of 9 of the same frames or a mishmash of all different frames and decor!   As I was searching 'gallery wall' images ...
